Urban myths & the paranormal

Urban legend archives

These sites compile and debunk Urban Myths and Legends. All take submissions from readers.

Snopes
The premier website for tracking and debunking Urban Myths and Legends. It's a bit slow to load, but is worth the wait. This is the site most often mentioned in press articles about Urban Legends. Warning: A few pages will play music.

The Straight Dope
Web site built around the popular column and books by Cecil Adams. Not specifically related to UMs, but it does include information on some of the more well known, as well as various other misperceptions and bits of misinformation.

alt.folklore.urban web archive
A web version of the original USENET newsgroup devoted to Urban Myths and legends. This site allows for search of both the web archive as well as current discussions on the USENET newsgroup. Although not as extensively researched as Snopes, you will most likely find a newly spreading UM here first.

Forteana & unexplained phenomena

Fish falls, mysterious blobs on the beach, ABCs (alien big cats), cryptids (Sasquatch, Loch Ness Monster, etc).

Fortean Times
The online version of the UK-based periodical. Devoted to "misfits of science", Fortean Times is an excellent resource for reports of the odd and unusual – occurrences that current science either cannot or will not examine or explain.

Parascope
UFOs, Cryptozoology, psychic phenomena, and a nice splash of cover-ups.

Conspiracy theories

The Face on Mars, Knights Templar, government cover-ups.

Art Bell
Radio host and collector of conspiracy theories, this web site is a good first hit when trying to find information on things like Crop Circles, the Face on Mars, etc. There is a good section of links to news articles on subjects discussed on the radio show, as well as listings for current broadcasts.

4Conspiracy Theories
A portal, with many links to other conspiracy sites. The listings are nicely categorized to make it easy to find just the conspiracy you want.

Skeptics

To round it all out, we come to groups that specialize in critical discussion and analysis of many of the topics raised on the sites above, as well as pop and pseudo scientific developments.

Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal
Publishers of The Skeptical Inquirer magazine, this group includes among its members (and contributers) Jan Harold Brunvand, expert on Urban Legends and author of many books on the subject. The website includes articles from past and current issue of their magazine, as well as information on any hot issues (for example, they have an entire page devoted to myths and hoaxes surrounding the events of September 11).

Skeptics Society
Publishers of Skeptic magazine. Their website is more extensive than the CSICOP site, with numerous articles both from their magazine as well as some exclusive to the site.
