| Heaven: laugh and play Go to Heaven Heaven is our forum for creativity, humour and lighter discussions. So it would only make sense that our Heaven webguide spotlights some of the most entertaining sites on the Net. Looking for distraction from the daily grind? This is where you find it. Entertainment, games and time-wasting The Wibsite The site of our own Dave Walker. Community, cartoons and random thoughts from the mind of one of the greatest haircuts of our time. The Door Dedicated to the other "only Christian satire magazine". While what's there is of high quality, there really isn't that much of it. SelectSmart Religion Quiz Unsure of what religion you are? Get rid of all your doubts (or maybe create a few here). Part of a site which offers polls for practically everything. The Brunching Shuttlecocks This is the place to go if you really want to waste some time choose from such wonders as the Alanis Lyric generator, Why Pippi Longstocking is a Great Book and Choose Your Own Damn Pokemon adventure. The associated BB (at www.brunchma.com) is another place to play Mornington Crescent, Scissors Paper Stone, etc. The Institute of Official Cheer A place where old pop culture is re-ironised, apparently. They've got sixteen thousand barrels of distilled irony in a vault. They may be our only hope. Absolutely hours of fun tons of stuff, and all of it well worth browsing. A work of genius. The York Mornington Crescent Server This is a place where you can go in order to play Mornington Crescent (i.e. not here). Dean and Nigel Blend in Err, that's it. Sheer genius. Sodaplay Calls itself the home of creative play (and who are we to argue?). Sodaplay has received two nominations for the 2001 BAFTA interactive entertainment awards in the "entertainment website" and "interactive arts" categories, and is featured in the Design Council "Great Expectations" exhibition showcasing 100 of Britain's best designers in Grand Central Station, New York. Hours of fun making and breaking intricate moving models. Papal Bowling You're the Pope, and you're ten-pin bowling. No, that's all there is. No, really. Comics United Media The ultimate cartoon site with a lot of favourites. If you've heard of it, it's probably here. Mainly US-centred, but with one or two British cartoonists represented. They keep archives of recent material. Keenspot A web comics site, with a large number of strips. Wood who doesn't really like web comics particularly recommends Bobbins (www.bobbins.org) but there's lots of great stuff, from all over the world. Browse around for a while and you're sure to find something that appeals. Bold's Fold A hilarious look at the evangelical subculture. There isn't much of stuff there (only 7 cartoons, last time we looked), but what there is is pretty good. Doonesbury Love it or hate it, Doonesbury's cast of characters have been challenging preconceptions for thirty years. Meet Mike, JJ, Zonker and the frankly sinister Uncle Duke as they wander haphazardly through the modern world. Beautifully designed and updated daily, the site also includes complete character guides, games and a complete searchable 30-year archive. Astounding Space Thrills! The web's most popular comic strip set in an amazing kitsch retro future where good guys are good guys, bad guys are bad guys and positive particles just aren't so sure... Fun, games, an archive. Search engines and other useful stuff Heaven recommends: The best all-round search engine on the web. Excite UK Which has an adult content filter. Invisible Web Useful for information that you just can't find with a normal search engine. Internet Movie Database The IMDB is the only place to go if you want to find out about any at all, no matter how obscure. Simply unrivalled. Bartleby Online classic literature. Search the bible, search the world factbook, search volumes of poetry, search almost any book you like, ask it how to pronounce the author's name, then follow the handy links to Amazon.com and buy your own copy. American/British Dictionary This is lovely! An American / British Dictionary but with so much more. Lots of windows and a truly eccentric author, this is packed with anecdotes, a very useful pronunciation guide, as well as all you need to know to figure out that peculiar post from the shipmate across the pond. World Wide Words "Investigating international English from a British viewpoint." Another packed wordy site. A little more erudite than the first and possibly easier to navigate. Find out the origins of such phrases as "all mouth and trousers" and learn about such words as Cyberchondria, as well as all those phrases that Shakespeare invented. |
