I was very sad to read the Mystery Worshipper report for St Nicholas, Worth, West Sussex.
We moved to this area in September of last year – and it is possible that the rector is new since your report. We were very positively welcomed by the congregation and the clergy. There is a Sunday School, a biggish choir for the size of the church, welcoming sidesmen (we come with children and they are also made welcome).
Many of the congregation are indeed elderly, but around half are young (i.e. around my age – I am in my forties) and there are teenagers in the choir and serving. The worship is catholic (which may be what your worshipper meant by formal) but the rector's sermons are thought-provoking and excellent. There are sometimes retired clergy who preach – one I find absolutely fine, and one is bit quiet and dull. It is clear to me that the sound system has been sorted out.
My seven year-old – an experienced but unenthusiastic churchgoer – said to me it was "a lovely church – the best I have ever been in", which is quite an endorsement.
I disagree with your Mystery Worshipper and felt strongly enough to email.
