The crucifixion of Gaza
St Mary the Virgin, Carlton

As the United States continues to supply high-tech bombs to Israel via Britain for use in Israel's war in Lebanon, humanitarian supplies in Gaza, also under attack from Israel, are running dangerously low. And the injuries of people arriving at the hospitals, many of them children, raise questions about the weaponry being deployed against the civilian population by Israel.

Ship of Fools has received a report on the situation in Gaza from the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem – click here to read it (PDF, 688kb).

Suhaila Tarazi, executive director of the Ahli Arab Hospital, which is run by the Diocese, says there are now severe shortages of medicine and water, and the hospital now has only 5-8 hours of electricity a day, because of the bombardment of the main power station in Gaza.

"Gaza is under a complete siege," says Suhaila. "We are running out of medicine. I am really afraid that if we do not get what we urgently need at the hospital for our medical stocks and our operating theatre we will stop operating."

One human rights centre in Gaza estimates that 26 people were killed and more than 200 injured in Gaza last week. Since the offensive in Gaza began, the BBC says that 140 Palestinians have been killed. The scale of death and injury has put a huge strain on the hospitals.

Sahaila comments: "Exploding shrapnel is causing severe burns and injuries and we do not even know what type of weapon they are using. Many people, amongst them many children, lost hands and limbs and have severe burns not only to the flesh but also to the muscles and bones."

"We are crucified every day," she says.
