The ship sails under the flag of orthodox Christianity, but on a buccaneering voyage. Originally a printed magazine, Ship of Fools was published in Britain between 1977 and 83. It attacked various herds of sacred cows, including born-again celebs, the cult of C.S. Lewis, and the Papal souvenir trade, and attracted a following of people who were ahead of their time: the pre-post-evangelicals. The magazine sank, Titanic-like, beneath the waves on April Fool's Day 1983. It was raised as a web magazine 15 years later to the day, in 1998. The voyage Ship of Fools exists to promote Christian unrest through humour, journalism, entertainment, discussion and community. What do we mean by Christian unrest? the people behind this site come from a wide range of Christian traditions. We broadly describe ourselves as "mere Christians", following the orthodox Christian faith described by C.S. Lewis. What do we mean by Christian unrest? we're trying to make sense of the faith which we love but which we also question. Christian unrest means looking at our faith critically. That critical look is both positive and negative the positive affirming what is true and good in Christian belief and experience; the negative attacking false religion which masquerades as the gospel. |
